The Highway Rat Paperback – 7 July 2016

Great illustrations and meaningful storyline. My 3 year old Granddaughter loved this book and other Julia Donaldson books.

Good book to add to my books for when the granddaughter comes over. Good pictures and love the story

Love the highway rat book and the cd helps children to follow along

Unusually from Julia Donaldson, the main protagonist of the story is a baddie: the Highway Rat is a thief. He steals from all those around him regardless of the fact that he won't actually like their food - he is a greedy Highway Rat. Indeed, he is such a baddie, that he even steals from his own horse. Then he meets a duck who takes him to a cave (supposedly where he will get cake, cake, cake and chocolate, chocolate, chocolate) but of course it is just an echo and he is fooled into going in. The duck races back - on the horse - to all the wronged animals and they have a great party with all their previously-stolen food. And what happens to the Highway Rat? Well, he finds his way out of the cave a better rat and now works in a Cake Shop having to sweep the floor. The Highway Rat is no more. He is just a rat.My child loved the rhyming quality and enjoyed the beautiful illustrations.I just disliked the rhymes - which reminded me of school and in particular the famous poem by Alfred Noyes about another baddie; The Highwayman - and the repetition is hard to say. I much prefer her other work.... still it is great to have this in our collection (not all adults like the books their children like and the reverse is true too).
