Q: How is this for hand embroidery? I want to embroider the edges of a cape with a plaited stitch.

I used the DMC metallic embroidery thread for cross stitch on 14 ct Aida fabric. Much softer, pliable and easier to work with than the DMC metallic floss. Hope this helps.

No, you cannot break this thread by hand.

Q: Is this lighter or heavier than the DMC silver thread for needlework?

It is slightly heavier than the DMC thread; however, it works just as well. I used it in making an appliquéd Christmas stocking without any issues.
